Learning Chinese

What is the difference between course and tutoring?

The courses are for those who want to learn Chinese from ChineseSession.com. The tutoring service is for the students who are taking classes somewhere else, especially from a college or a grade school, but want some extra help or language companion to supplement the regular course.

Who are the instructors?

All of our instructors are well-trained certified professional language instructors. Most of them are graduates from our own intensive, strict, 160+ hours training program. Most of them hold Bachelor of Science or higher degree too. Further, all of our instructors have to take an extended period of practical training and have to pass a series of strict tests to prove that their accent are impeccable, their grammars are flawless, and their teaching skills are effective.

 Who are the tutors?

Most of our tutors are instructors in training. They often enjoy the same or even better teaching skill and competence level of the instructors in other similar schools. Some tutors are well-trained individuals who prefer to not spend time on more structured instructing schedules.

Who are the targeted students?

You! Yes, anyone who is interested to learn or improve his/her Chinese can benefit from our class or tutoring service. Since our service is one-on-one, our experienced instructor will assess your proficiency, understand your interest, then tailor the lessons to your own need. No matter you want to take a tour to China, conduct business with Chinese (either in China or in your own country), or simply want to acquire another skill, you can always find a suitable lesson for you. Even you are taking a class with another college or language school, our tutoring service will help you to get an extra boost.

How many hours do I need to learn Chinese?

It depends on your goal, your schedule, your effort, and of course, your way of learning Chinese. For example, according to Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) center, the “basic Chinese proficiencies, namely, those who have taken 100 to 800 hours of regular modern Chinese learning”, will be “able to understand simple sentences and express simple ideas and capable of simple communication in his or her daily life and study”. With private instructor and private tutor from ChineseSession.com, you don’t need the 800 hours to get the basic level. We will put an average 200~300 hours for our past students from beginner to Basic level. Of course, you need far more than 200 hours and very hard (yet fun) work to truly master a language, and you need much fewer hours to just get survival level of spoken Chinese.

Please refer http://www.hsk.org.cn/english/Intro_summ.aspx for more information about HSK. If you knew HSK and would like to take a test, we can help you on the application and preparation.

Please remember, even you have mastered the language, it will become rusty if you don’t use it. Try to find any opportunity to practice your newly acquired skill. Or, we have our tutoring service right here for you. Give them a hour or two per week, you can keep your skill shiny, and maybe get a lifelong friendship across the world.

What is the schedule of the class?

You decide! Unlike the fixed schedule offered by most schools, you can make your own schedule. Then we will find an instructors or tutor to work around your schedule. No matter you want to take a two-week intensive learning before a vacation in China, or want to follow a specific course schedule in a college, or anywhere in between, we will always work with you.

Here are three sample schedules to reach HSK basic level. (The real schedule will vary for different people and different goals. Please consult your instructor for a personalized schedule.)

Sample A: 9-week intensive program:

  • 5 hours/day * 5 days/week * 9 weeks = 225 hours class time
  • You also get about 200 hours of free tutoring for practice, homework
  • If you want to take the HSK basic level test, it’s recommended to give another week (25 hours) for review and preparation.

Sample B: One year regular program:

  • 1 hour/day * 5 days/week * 50 weeks = 250 hours class time.
  • You also get about 250 hours of free tutoring for practice, homework
  • If you want to take the HSK basic level test, it’s recommended to give another month (about 20 hours) for review and preparation.

Sample C: Two year relaxed program:

  • 1 hour/day * 3 days/week * 100 weeks = 300 hours class time.
  • You also get about 300 hours of free tutoring for practice, homework
  • If you want to take the HSK basic level test, it’s recommended to give another month (about 20 hours) for review and preparation.
